What does Windows Phone 8 need?

(The early work on WPH Folders, one of the many "missing features" in WP7)

Quick thought has come to mind. When WP7 was released, meaning, when nobody had even heard the name "NoDo", a lot was missing. It was called a version 1.0 by many critics, but it really felt like a 0.5 alpha. In fact, looking back on it, a lot of things were missing that seem really common these days:

  • Copy & Paste
  • Text selection
  • Ring tones
  • App switching (multitasking)
  • Just about every API used today
  • etc, etc

These things were fixed as WP7 matured. Still, many features felt "missing" to some, compared to other smartphone choices. But with WP8 out now, a lot of the API gaps are being closed, and the OS has matured a great deal. This is great, but a few key things are still "missing", in the loose sense of the word. Here are some things on the top of my head:

  • Folders - Might not wanted by all, or even the majority, but the app list can get very, very long.
  • Orientation Lock - For obvious reasons
  • Customization - Accent on black gets boring, some would argue. Others would not, but come on, are custom accents so bad?
  • A way to clear temp files - WP8 is just as bad as WP7, it seems
  • Notification Center - Let's not even go there.

These are things that, on WP7, came through homebrew. Well, except that last one, but you get the gist. On WP8, however, there is no homebrew, there's no rooting, no sideloading, nothing. At least, for the time being, but I'm no psychic, and neither is anybody else in the world.

But I suppose my question is, with WP8 more mature than its father, what does it need? Interested in peoples' thoughts.
